Use the mistakes below as lessons on what you should do (and not do) in order to get your dream job or become more of a professional. Check back regularly to this series on Milwaukee Millennial to make sure you aren’t making these small mistakes that are leaving you asking Why Didn’t I Get the Job?

Spelling names wrong

If someone spells my name wrong, I am instantly annoyed. Especially when someone’s name is usually in their professional email. I don’t care if your sister spells her name “Kristen”… if you don’t spell mine “Kristin” than I am going to write you off as someone that doesn’t pay attention to details.

Having an unprofessional email

Countrygal@yahoo.com or dirttrackracer47@hotmail.com is not going to show that you are serious about anything. Get a gmail account like the rest of the world and keep it simple to your name. Don’t think you can ignore this one! If you need to have a video interview on skype or google hangouts, your interviewer has to type your email and WILL notice it.

A bad handshake

I’ve shook hands with someone that squeezed my hand so hard, I honestly couldn’t remember his name. He became the handbreaker guy… you don’t want to be the handbreaker guy. I’ve also shook hands with someone that had such a limp hand, I wondered if I went in as limp as her, we would have just been loosely rubbing our hands together. The thought of that kind of creeps me out just thinking of it. Find someone like your mother and ask her for advice.

Phone Going Off During Interview

Turning your phone on silent is only effective if you turn off the vibrate as well. We all can hear a phone vibrate and we are all accustomed to know exactly what that sound is.
